39,790 Missing People In London in 2018

Friday 11 January 2019

No one likes to think that a friend or family member might go missing at some point, but it does happen and it can be very difficult indeed to know what to do or where to turn to if someone you love does disappear.

New figures from the Metropolitan Police show that there were 39,790 missing person reports made to the force in the first 11 months of last year, the East London & West Essex Guardian reports, with a Force Management Statement published in June showing that the city has about 20 per cent of all missing persons’ cases in the UK.

Labour London Assembly spokesman for crime Unmesh Desia, who wrote asking for the figures, was quoted by the news source as saying: “The stark and unavoidable reality is that unless the government completely reconsider their approach to police funding, the number of missing persons reports will simply become unsustainable.

“It is imperative that we should be able to offer reassurances to these families that the police have the capacity to do all they can to bring those missing, safely home.”

Back in October, the BBC reported that there are about 55,000 missing people cases in London and of these, about 80 per cent of people are found within 24 hours, often without having to involve the police. But the Met still spend between £70 million and £130 million on such cases each year.
