Scottish Police Investigate Nearly 12,500 Missing Person Cases

Wednesday 4 July 2018

Figures shared by Police Scotland have revealed that the forces north of the border received almost 23,000 missing person reports in 2017/18, relating to nearly 12,500 people.

The Edinburgh Reporter shared the data, which also revealed that over 99 per cent of those who are reported missing are traced alive.

Just 0.4 per cent are found dead, while 0.1 per cent are never located. The data also showed that, of those who are traced deceased, the majority are adult men, many of whom have never gone missing before and who have no history of mental illness.

ACC Bernard Higgins told the news provider that people go missing for “many different and complex reasons”.

“We cannot underestimate the impact such cases have on families and people’s loved ones and the support of communities is vital in helping us trace missing persons,” he added.

ACC Higgins also revealed that missing person cases are often one of the biggest demands on modern policing.

While involving the police in any missing person case is advisable, you may also want help to find a missing person in London from a private detective agency, who can provide extra resources to help track down your loved one.

Earlier this year, the BBC reported that there were 55,189 reports of people missing in London in 2017. The news provider noted that the number of people who are missing from care has risen by 34 per cent since 2013, with teenagers the largest age group to be reported missing.
